Prompt: Write about your main character in your current book. What strategies did the author use to clue you in to your character's personality?
I am currently reading The Ask and the Answer which is the second book in a series called Chaos Walking. The main character is Todd Hewitt. You learn very quickly in the first book that Todd doesn't really know what's really going on. He's been told one thing all his life and then suddenly it's revealed to him that all of the history he's learned is a lie and he's thrown into this sort of adventure and he has to face a lot of harsh reality's as well as many difficult situations. It's proven time and time again that Todd is very determined because no matter how tired or how injured and broken he is, he keeps going and he keeps fighting and he just doesn't quit until he gets to his goal. Todd is also the type of person who can never seem to catch a break. Right when you think the bad things are over and something good happens, it's destroyed or taken from him. It's like one bad thing after the next for him and it's amazing how he makes it through it. Todd can sometimes be a bit naive. He usually plays into the hands of whoever's against him but he doesn't mean to because he's still learning about the twisted world that he lives in. You can also tell that Todd is very caring, which is displayed a lot through his interaction with Viola. He'd do anything for her, but this becomes a weakness for him later that contributes to him again "playing into the hands of his enemies." Overall I think Todd is a great character. He has a lot of depth for a 13-14 year old and I often think he's older than that just because of what he has to deal with and what he goes through.

Prompt: Write 100 words about a character that has an unexpected combination of traits
Idea -- A girl going into the field of biology, who is afraid of frogs. It was a beautiful spring day! There was a slight breeze coming through the woods, the sun was peeking through the canopy of trees providing the perfect amount of light. The perfect day for a class field study. We all got suited up to take water samples from the pond in the nearby forest and headed to the spot, pointing out different trees and animals along the way. As we approached the water I looked around causiously. The area looks clear so I begin to collect some water. As I bend down, I quickly realize my previous search was not done well enough because there it is, with it's weird slimy skin and black eyes. I scream at the top of my lungs and take off running. My heart is beating out of my chest and the feeling of pure terror spreads throughout me. In my head I'm screaming "Nope! Nuh-uh!! I'm cool dude! Nope! No way am I going back over there!" but turns out I'm actually yelling half of that out loud. After I've finally calmed down I still stayed about 20ft away from the pond. 'Can't wait to explain this one to my mom,' I think as I roll my eyes and we all head back to class. I would have to say that one of the qualities that I really respect in people is when they are willing to admit that they are wrong. For me, as well as many people I'm sure, this can be really hard. People are stubborn and always want to be right and sometimes this can be really destructive. I have a lot of respect for people who are willing to admit that they may have messed up or maybe didn't have their facts straight and have the ability to keep their cool about it. For one thing that shows honesty and for another it shows courage and humility. They are willing to admit they messed up, which may come with consequences or maybe embarrassment. If they're willing to risk either of those things just to make something right I find that very honorable and respectful. |
